An excellent student, a researcher, a four-time Ukrainian champion and a prominent figure in ACM-W: this is our graduate, Karina Goryainova

The V.V. Popovsky Department of Information and Communication Engineering at Kharkiv National University of Radio Electronics (KNURE) is always proud of its students and graduates, who not only demonstrate a high level of knowledge but also achieve significant success in academia, sport and international activities. A striking example of the combination of high academic achievement, sporting prowess and active civic engagement is Karina Goryainova, a graduate of degree programme 172, "Electronic Communications and Radio Engineering".

Academic achievements and research accomplishments

Throughout her studies, Karina was consistently ranked among the top students in the Department of Information and Communication Technologies and won prizes in the ‘Department’s Top Students’ competition. Her thirst for knowledge was reflected in her active research work:

  • She has 15 research publications in national and international journals.
  • She was awarded the Kharkiv City Mayor’s "Giftedness" scholarship! The scholarship was awarded on a competitive basis following an analysis of students’ academic and research performance.
  • She participated in and won prizes in the first round of the All-Ukrainian Competition of Student Research Papers and Student Olympiads at the Department of IKI.
  • She regularly presented the results of her own research at scientific and technical conferences for undergraduates and postgraduates.
  • She successfully completed the semester-long courses as part of the international educational project DigiJED-2 ("Digital Education Through Joint Efforts").
  • She took part in international academic mobility and exchange programmes (Erasmus+) at Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Germany (Köthen).
  • The culmination of her undergraduate studies was a brilliant defence of her bachelor’s thesis, for which she received a high mark.

Sport, discipline and determination

Karina’s academic achievements go hand in hand with her outstanding sporting achievements. She is a four-time Ukrainian athletics champion!

Sport has taught her discipline, stamina, the ability to set ambitious goals and to move confidently towards achieving them. It is precisely this character, forged through sport, that helps her successfully overcome complex technical and scientific challenges in the field of information and communications technology and cyber security.

International recognition and involvement with the Kharkiv ICT ACM-W Chapter

An important chapter in Karina’s life was her active involvement in the international community of women researchers in the field of computer science. She joined the Kharkiv Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) ACM-W Professional Chapter, where she served as Web Master for a considerable period of time (Past Web Master).

Key international achievements:

  1. Participation in the 10th ACM-W womENcourage 2023 International Conference (Trondheim, Norway): Karina delivered a research paper on the specific characteristics of phishing attacks on enterprise employees ("Analysis of the Peculiarities of Phishing Attacks on Enterprise Employees").
  2. The womENcourage 2024 Conference in Madrid (Spain): She continued to showcase the research potential of Ukraine and KhNURE on the international stage.
  3. International coverage in ACM-W: Karina’s story and experience were featured in a special article in the official ACM-W publication (“Spotlighting The Kharkiv Information & Communication Technologies (ICT) in the ACM-W Professional Chapter’s Corner”), which highlighted her contribution to mentoring girls in STEM and challenging stereotypes.

Involvement in departmental life and careers guidance

Karina has always been at the heart of departmental life at KhNURE. She was actively involved in careers guidance events organised by the V.V. Popovsky Department of Information and Communication Technologies for school pupils and prospective students in Kharkiv during challenging times:

  • She presented the opportunities offered by information and communication specialisms during off-campus and online events at Metroshkol.
  • She took part in large-scale interactive presentations by KNURE at the "Nikolsky" shopping centre, where she vividly demonstrated to young people the appeal of modern IT and telecommunications technologies.

Karina is currently studying for her Master’s degree. She works at Lifecell.

The V.V. Popovsky Department of Information and Communication Technologies warmly congratulates Karina on her achievements and wishes her further academic success, as well as new sporting and professional victories! We are proud of our graduate!
